IPL 2011 Auctions, the much awaited cricket picks

Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions for players have been scheduled on the 8th and 9th of January wherein above 400 cricket champs will be under the selling spree as teams make their required preferences.

Sources close to the team confirmed that the auction will be set in Bangalore and the number of players involved will be 416.

Under the regulations meant for IPL players can be retained by the team but the limitation is set on four players only.

Out of these four players only three can be Indian cricketers. This retaining also comes with a price as per the rules a deduction of $9 million will be done from the salary cap.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, the champion teams of last year’s league have been fully retained.

The former team has retained Indian cricket teams captain MS Dhoni along with Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina and Albie Morkel the all rounder of South Africa.

Mumbai Indians on the other hand has retained the cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar along with players like Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh and Kieron Pollard the powerhouse of West India.

In the auctions MI and CSK have spent their vast amount and are only left with $4.5 million to buy players which can also be through Ranji players that are not a part ofthe auction.

The Delhi team Daredevils has made a quick start with the swaggering player Virender Sehwag, while the Royal Challengers have held back Virat Kohli.

The Aussie players Shane Watson and Shane Warne have been retained by Rajasthan Royals.

Indian Premier League 2011

The next hearing of the BCCI's disciplinary committee that is considering the case against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has been postponed by two weeks to December 27th and 28th. The three-man committee was scheduled to have its next sitting on Monday and Tuesday, but decided to push it back on the request of Modi's attorney Mehmood Abdi.

Abdi asked for the postponement after Modi's counsel Swadeep Hora, who has been cross-examining the witnesses of the BCCI, met with an accident on Friday evening. Arun Jaitley, one of members of the committee who is also a part of the IPL governing council, agreed to Abdi's request.

At the previous hearing on November 22, Modi had raised a technical point that the panel probing charges of financial irregularities allegedly committed by him as the IPL chief did not have the mandate of the board's AGM held on September 29.

The board, subsequently, convened a special general body meeting on December 11 and appointed the same three-man panel consisting of Jaitley, Chirayu Amin and Jyotiraditya Scindia to continue the disciplinary proceedings against Modi.

Championship here to stay

While the focus of attention will be on India and the launch of the IPL, back in England the County Championship begins on Wednesday. The domestic game comes in for more than it's fair share of criticism, but the Championship has developed into a keenly fought competition where the quality has improved with two divisions. In The Sunday Telegraph, Steve James welcomes the new season by saying there is plenty of interest in what will happen.

At least the championship has the excuse of being mostly played on working days. So it has a mystifying multitude of hidden fans. They include the scourers of newspaper scorecards on the train to work; the Ceefax addicts ensconced on the sofa at home, and more recently, of course, the internet browsers sneaking a look in the workplace. Cricinfo, the leading cricket website, says that its county cricket site recorded a remarkable 26-million page views during the 2007 season.

The IPL - cricket's fourth epoch

The Indian Premier League, which launches in less than a week, has brought forth a host of responses from respected voices in the game. To start things off, Scyld Berry, writing in the Sunday Telegraph, labels the IPL as the 'fourth age of cricket'.
When dusk descends on India this Friday evening, and the lights go on in Bangalore, not only will the Indian Premier League commence. It will also launch the fourth age of cricket.
The first era extended from the sport's birth in medieval England to the 1870s; the second covered Test cricket for the next hundred years; and the third was the commercial, international era launched in Australia by Kerry Packer.
Starting next weekend, India will shape the sport, as their eight city-based franchises play matches of 20 overs per side in a three-hour package designed for mass, global entertainment. The salaries of the top IPL cricketers are beyond the wildest imaginings of anyone who has played before - unless the Aladdin who went into a cave was a useful all-rounder.
